Teaching Workshops at Talaera
Quick access: CHECKLIST - TEACHING - LOGISTICS - ADMIN/FAQs
Here's a quick checklist you can use for your group courses with Talaera.
- Materials. Find the links to slides in your personal Google spreadsheet (sent to you by Talaera).
- Customize. Go over it and make it your own. There’s more info than what you’ll be able to teach, so select what you find relevant.
- Zoom session. When you log in, you can greet your students and share your screen on Zoom without ‘presenting’ and feel free to use the slides as a whiteboard to add notes.
- First session. It’s always great to welcome students, tell them why they’re here, and get them excited (“your company decided to invest in your development, so make the most of these X sessions”). Then, walk them through the course syllabus, dates, and logistics.
- Attendance. Remember to check attendance in the attendance list! You don't need to send this to anyone, but please keep it updated at all times.
- Student Survey. Please be sure to share the student feedback survey in the Zoom chat at the end of every session while you take attendance.
- Feedback. Right after the lesson, please submit a feedback survey.
- Summary/Slides. After the session, send an email to the students (with logistics@talaera.com and alexandra@talaera.com in bcc) including the session summary, the homework, and the slides in PDF format. You are welcome to use this template.
Materials
You will find the materials for each workshop/group in your personal spreadsheet. If you need help locating your sheet, please reach out to us (logistics@talaera.com).
Prepare
Get started by reviewing the slides for each week’s session. Keep in mind that:
Every week, you will see the next slide deck in your personal spreadsheet.
- Always review the slides before teaching.
- You will need to make a copy and may need to edit the review and homework slides.
- Please notify Alexandra@talaera.com if you find typos or other clear errors. We often recycle slides for other materials and appreciate knowing about problems!
All slides have speaker notes. The speaker notes are like a lesson plan, and you are welcome to use them to make your prep easier. Please read them, as they may have essential information about the client or mandatory activities or framing.
Options to customize:
- Homework: we may suggest homework, but you are welcome to add your own based on what you think is relevant to your learners.
- Slides marked as optional - those are to accommodate level and speed.
- If students demonstrate a clear mastery of a topic or indicate that something is truly irrelevant to them, skip it.
- Add or reduce vocabulary based on students’ level, need, and interest.
- Add an activity if you think you students will enjoy/benefit from it, such as a role play or discussion.
The slides are based on the client’s pain points and requests, so it is very important to adhere to the slides and instructions. Please let us know in your feedback survey after each lesson if there is a major mismatch between the students and the content. This is also a great place to tell us if you made an addition or adjustment, or if you ran out of time to cover all material.
Using Zoom
When you log in, greet your students and share your screen on Zoom. Do not send students the Google Slides link. They will have access to a PDF later.
Please see this doc for instructions on how to do the following:
- Claim host abilities
- Use breakout rooms for Workshops
- Share your screen or broadcast a message to breakout rooms
Please set your background to this Talaera background. Review these instructions for information on how to use a virtual background.
Note: If it is your first time teaching a workshop, a member of the Talaera team will reach out to you to schedule a brief, paid, Zoom test call to practice the above steps.
First Session
It’s always great to welcome students, tell them why they’re here, and get them excited (“your company decided to invest in your development, so make the most of these X sessions”). Then, walk them through the course syllabus, dates, and logistics.
Tip: Encourage your students to make use of Talaera Self-Study to leverage their progress during the course!
Note: If the content or level doesn't resonate with your students (e.g. you see that it's too difficult/easy for them, they express a lack of interest in any of the topics), let us know ASAP.
Wrapping up your sessions
Important: At the end of each session, you will find a slide prompting the students to fill out a survey with their feedback. This feedback is incredibly valuable and can help ensure they have the best experience. Please leave a couple of moments at the end of each session to share the student survey link in the Zoom chat and ask them to fill out the survey while you take attendance.
Attendance Sheet
The attendance doc is where the attendance for each session is tracked. You will find it in your personal sheet (provided by Talaera). Please fill this out at the end of each session while the students complete their surveys...
Instructions:
- Open the attendance sheet link. At the bottom of the sheet, find the tab with your name.
- Under the session date, click the arrow to open a dropdown menu and select either “Present” or “Absent” for each student.
Teacher Survey
You will find a link to your teacher survey in your personal sheet. Please submit a survey immediately following each workshop session. Feel free to add any comments, questions, or concerns you may have.
Feedback surveys are a mandatory step in the workshop process. Please complete them immediately after each session.
This is your workshop. Quickly and thoroughly completing the feedback survey allows us to make adjustments that best suit your students. Constructive criticism and specific requests are welcome!
Homework/ Session Summary
Within 24 hours after each session, please do the following:
- After deleting any unused slides, download a copy of your customized slides as a PDF.
- Send an email including the session summary, any relevant homework, and the PDF version of the week's slides to the students in the group. Always include logistics@talaera.com and alexandra@talaera.com in the bcc.
- Tip - Please follow this template for your session summary: 0_TGC Feedback Email Template
- Note - You can find the list of participants and their emails in your personal Google Sheet.
Does the course sync with the Talaera Platform?
No, it doesn’t. Please note that the workshops take place outside of the Talaera Platform. Therefore, it is very important that you block out those times on your teaching calendar to prevent double bookings.
Do students have access to the Talaera Platform/Catalog?
Usually yes. After the first session, all workshop students will receive access to the platform for self-study. They will have access during the course as well as 6 months afterwards. The students will not show up on your student list, so please copy and paste the URL to any exercises on the platform that you decide to include in homework.
Tip: The first session is a great opportunity to generate enthusiasm for the Talaera Catalog resources. Please encourage your students to make use of the platform to leverage their progress.
Payment
At the end of each month, please send one invoice to billing@talaera.com and CC abigail@talaera.com.
What to include in your invoice:
- Number of workshop sessions taught within that month x $100
- Initial Zoom Test Calls With Scheduling Team (under 30 min) = $12
- Pre-workshop meetings with Talaera Account Manager/client = $24 *Note: Any time you may need to get familiar with the materials is included in the session fee."
